Herbert Mills residence circa 1920

The Herbert S. Mills residence---Pleasant Home is located at the corner of Pleasant Street and Home Avenue in Oak Park Illinois.  Occupied by the Mills family from 1910 until the mid 1930's, this landmark prairie style home is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.   Upon the deaths of Mr. & Mrs. Mills in the 1930's, the home and grounds transferred to the Park District of Oak Park who maintain it today.  It is open to visitors all year long.

In 2009 Mills Novelty Company and Haughawout Music Company completed the installation of a fully restored Mills Violano with digital interface system.  The Mills Violano can now once again entertain and amaze visitors of future generations just as it did during the Mills years of the 1920's.

We have included a number of original photos (used with permission of the Pleasant Home Foundation) showing the house as it was during the family years and as it is today.   It is a stunningly beautiful example of George W. Maher design, and worthy of a visit when you are in the Chicago area.  They ask a nominal few dollar admission charge, to offset the maintenance expenses.  The staff is all volunteer.  We suggest you call, 708-383-2654 for hours and to better plan your visit.  The address is 217 Home Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois  60302.
